Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness . . . . .

by Gordon Howie

January 17th is an important day of remembrance.  While we honor men who have led in this march to freedom, which is the right thing to do, more importantly we remember what this day means to men and women in America and across the world.

Great men and women have sacrificed much to pave the way for freedom.  One of those great leaders is honored today in Rapid City, South Dakota.  Dr. Frederick Reese was instrumental in the civil rights movement, along with the likes of Dr. Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks.

I have been in the presence of many dignitaries and people elected high to political offices, but today we honor not a dignitary or a politician.  Today we honor a LEADER.  This side of heaven, Dr. Reese is as close as I will ever get to Rosa Parks or Dr. King.  He is an inspiration to all of us who feel the call to do something that will change our world for the better.  It has been a high privilege to be in the same room with this man.  He is a leader in the truest sense of the word.

“News In Faith” — what a terrific concept! I so appreciated Martin Luther King, Jr. in that he encouraged us to walk together, pray together, sing together and live together – in peace! One of my favorite quotes from him reads, “Forgiveness is not an occasional act, it’s a permanent obligation.” Congratulations as this new publishing endeavor as it’s unleashed across our state, nation and world!
